An oral health risk assessment is a examination used to identify how likely a person is to develop dental diseases such as tooth decay, gum disease, and other infections of the mouth. This includes screening for oral cancers. It is very easy, and does not take very long to do. It is always completed as part of an initial appointment, and periodically thereafter to regularly monitor for changes in health. This ensures any problems that may arise can be managed in early stages, rather than left untreated and dental health is significantly compromised.
Professional removal of hard and soft bacterial deposits that form around the teeth and under gumlines is essential in maintaining healthy teeth and gums, and prevent the formation of more aggressive bacterial populations associated with disease. Some bacteria in our mouths have very toxic by-products that are associated with other general health issues such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and Alzheimer's. It is important to regularly disrupt this bacterial environment to ensure the nasty bugs cannot become established and call your mouth home!
Although it is important to have regular professional tooth cleaning to maintain health, a person needs to have an effective daily routine at home that can manage bacterial accumulations between dental appointments. Not only do some oral bacteria cause systemic diseases, but sometimes bacterial accumulations can become so thick they can dislodge and be inhaled into the lungs. This can cause serious lung infections and is life threatening. We work side by side with patients and carers in developing daily oral care routines that are tailored to an individuals own unique challenges, and work toward building confidence in caring for oneself to maintain dignity, independence, and a good quality of life.
Individuals that have high risks of dental diseases, often made worse by complex medical health issues or limited ability to self care, may benefit from the application of professionally applied therapeutic agents to make teeth more resilient. Some therapeutic interventions, such as fluoride varnishes, can help prevent teeth from becoming soft from acidic bacteria, but can also help to harden tooth surfaces that have already softened from decay, preventing the decay from progressing. These interventions may prevent toothaches or tooth loss, which is especially important when a person cannot easily access a dental clinic.

My name is Amber and I have been working as a Dental Hygienist since graduating in 2005. Born and raised in Melbourne, I spent many years working in general dental and specialist clinics before deciding to leave the rat-race behind, and move my young family to Ballarat in 2016.
Helping people achieve their best version of dental health is what I'm all about. I believe all people from all walks of life should have access to basic dental care and education, and this is the purpose behind Happy Days Dental Hygiene.
I have worked with people of all ages, backgrounds and disabilities over the years. I am a member of the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia Special Needs Interest Group, and I have a genuine interest in helping people be the best version of themselves. I look forward to helping you achieve this in the comfort of your own home!
